Pregrouting is often carried out to reduce the amount of water seeping into the tunnel when tunneling below the groundwater level. During pregrouting, the fractures in the rock mass in front of the tunnel face are sealed. As the tunnel progresses, the stresses are redistributed which give rise to new deformations in the rock mass. These deformations can, for example, be shear movement in existing fractures. These deformations will lead to increased water ingress into the tunnel if these fractures are in contact with water. The aim of the present report was to study these deformations and analyze their influence on grouting, as well as to give recommendations as to whether and how the grouting should be adapted to them. The deformations have been analyzed with two-dimensional numerical analysis. Tunnel width, fracture inclination and the fracture's friction angle are varied in the analyses. The resulting shear plasticization and normal deformation in a discontinuity element in the model have been studied. The result has shown that the studied parameters affect the size and spread of the deformations and that the design of grouting concepts therefore should take these parameters into account. The grouting geometry such as lookout and overlap need to be adapted to the tunnel width and the expected rock joint deformation for the design to consider the deformations that are due to the tunneling. The report has shown that grouting needs to be adapted to the deformations that come from tunneling. However, only numerical modeling in two dimensions with limited variation in properties has been performed, which has inherent limitations. Continued research is recommended considering that negative environmental impact such as groundwater drawdown is a topical issue in tunneling.
