Currently in Swedish practice, drained properties of clay till (which is a material known for its variability) is estimated with a simplistic assumption that does not account for enough variation. Nevertheless, it is important to obtain a more precise mechanical parameters of the soil, not only to avoid overdesigned structures, but also to avoid failure, as infrastructure grows to cater to the growing population. This study sets out an experimental campaign involving both field and laboratory geotechnical testing to characterise the drained properties of clay till. Imaging is also performed to better understand how the soil behave under shearing. Results have shown that the strength is potentially higher than the one estimated with current assumptions. Analysis on the images has also provided insight on how the inclusions are affecting the shearing behaviour of the soil.
