The title of this project is “ACHT – Autonomous Cargo Handling on Tankers” and it consists of a concept study. Based on the background and motivation described in the section above, the objective of this concept study is to map current cargo handling operations on oil and chemical tankers (including communication with port) and investigate the conditions (gaps, opportunities and operator needs, as well as the technological possibilities) for an optimized cargo handling management system with inter-system communication and increased automatization to predict and control cargo handling on tankers using AI and ML. A design concept and guidelines for the updated cargo handling management system can be outlined as a result. This concept study is important from the viewpoint of operational performance, safety, and energy efficiency in shipping, at a time where the pressures for reduced emissions are at an all-time high. The results of this study will serve as the steppingstone for a follow-up project aimed at demonstrating a proof of concept. This will comprise developing the updated cargo handling management software prototype, testing it in a simulated environment with crew (using real-life cargo handling operations data) and involving the classification societies in developing an approval process for the new design for use onboard tankers.
