Abstract [en]
In this project RISE Proving Ground AstaZero developed a practical method for moving test equipment, securing stable connectivity, and establishing workflows for testing autonomous vehicles outside traditional proving grounds. The work was driven by demand from the automotive industry and Swedish road authorities. The method makes it possible to test autonomous vehicles and driver assistance systems at locations closer to where development takes place. This improves efficiency and enables verification closer to vehicle and sensor manufacturers. In the long term, this can support faster development of safer systems and help reduce fatalities and injuries in traffic. The project contributes to traffic safety by enabling more flexible and realistic testing of autonomous vehicles and ADAS. By combining mobile test equipment, stable connectivity, geofencing, and new test workflows, tests can be carried out in relevant real-world environments. This makes it possible to identify faults, limitations, and safety-critical behaviours earlier in the development process. As a result, testing can be improved, iterations can be faster, and the risk of unsafe systems reaching public traffic can be reduced. The project also included an assessment of relevant laws, regulations, and insurance aspects for testing in both enclosed areas and public environments. By addressing legal and regulatory requirements at an early stage, the project supports testing that is both legally sound and traffic safe. This reduces risk during the test phase and creates better conditions for evaluating safety-critical technology.
