F-AUTO Part II : Flexible automation and presentation of situational information with sensors and AI (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The idea behind Adaptive Automation (F-Auto) is that the traffic management system - in the control room - should have the ability to understand the human traffic controller and adapt its information, based on the individual's current tasks and analysis of the traffic situation. For example, such a traffic management system could signal (predict) that there is an emerging situation that needs to be given special attention, or postpone a less important alarm if the traffic controller is busy. In the F-auto projects (Part 1 and Part 2), the research group has created a number of innovative concepts for adaptive automation and created sharp demonstrator systems to study advanced adaptive automation in a control room environment. The approach in the projects has been to work together with traffic controllers - from the maritime, aviation and railway domains - to develop interaction concepts that are continuously refined and implemented in technical prototypes that are evaluated. In Part 1 of the project, which was carried out in 2018-2020, the need for attention support for traffic controllers across all modes of transport was identified. This led to the development of (1) a number of concepts and prototypes for adaptive automation, (2) the development of a cognitive theory for adaptive automation (Joint Control Framework), (3) the development of an AI software framework for the transport sector with operator support (SOMA-AI), and (4) the installation of a high-performance computing cluster for AI studies at LiU. The aim of F-Auto2 was to continue the work done in the first part of the project, refine concepts and prototypes, evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the adaptive automation approach, and make comparisons between traffic domains. In F-Auto2, the research group has further developed the interaction concepts for compliant automation and the theory - the Joint Control Framework - with a research tool for interaction analysis (JCF Editor) applied to traffic controller tasks. Regarding the technical development of system prototypes for traffic control, we have in Part 2 developed SOMA-AI further to support rapid AI prototyping with streaming data from existing simulator environments. The goal of this development was to be able to quickly evaluate different HMIs (Human Machine Interfaces) and evaluate AI assistants for traffic control in existing traffic simulators. Different parts of SOMA-AI are used in several TrV-related projects (ASSIST, Navstöd från Land and DitaRTS) and have been used in various simulation environments, including a Swedish Maritime Administration VTS simulator and the Saab's Remote Tower environment. The research results from the project have been reported internationally and nationally at various conferences and journals, including popular science journals (see Section: Published research contributions). An important result from F-Auto2 is the doctoral thesis “Flexible Automation in Air Traffic Control Through Adaption of Human-AI Collaboration” by Magnus Nylin (2024). The thesis describes five research articles – carried out in the project – where the approach and results of evaluations of prototypes with traffic controllers are presented. During the project period, the project has arranged the SweAuto conference on two occasions (2021 and 2024). The aim of the conferences has been to promote knowledge exchange on automation and AI between academia and industry. It can also be said that the F-Auto project has resulted in at least three research groups being established (Lundberg and Bång’s respective groups at LiU and Praetorius’ group at VTI). In addition to this, our approach has generated interest especially within the EU's Horizon2020 research program, where LiU and our project partners are now part of various research projects.
